On October 2nd Fauxmoir Lit Mag (Fauxmoir.com) informed me that my piece, “Eulogizing Mom,” will be published in their Issue # 11, which I anticipate will drop sometime in the next two weeks. Fauxmoir previously published my personal essay “The Curator of Family Regrets” in their Issue No. 7 in February of this year. I’m thrilled that they’ve accepted my latest submission.
“Eulogizing Mom” is the sixth chapter from my memoir in progress. Given the enthusiasm with which the most recent revision of that chapter was received by the two writing groups I’m part of, I was confident that it might get picked up as a stand-alone personal essay. My confidence was not misplaced.
I hear some of you ask, why would he publish a chapter from his yet to be published memoir as a stand-alone personal essay?
For so many reasons.
I was inspired by Martin Pousson’s novel Black Sheep Boy which is a series of short stories assembled into a novel, three of which were published in gay or gay friendly publications, one of which won him a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, two of which were finalists for the Glimmer Train Fiction awards. Publishing chapters or stories from a larger work in progress helps to give an author exposure to a reader base and build name recognition. Personally, it helps build confidence in this author that he’s on the right track, that his work is compelling enough to warrant being read by the general public.
When Fauxmoir’s Issue # 11 is published in the coming days, I’ll let you know. I’ll be curious to hear your what you think of “Eulogizing Mom.”
